We chatted with multi-genre artist and visual designer, Abby Manock, recently to see what she’s been up to since we spoke last.
The last year has been busy! I’ve been doing a lot of scenic, prop and set design and construction, painted a few murals, and have been developing a new costumed conceptual performative project. I also designed and created a line of sweatshirts with a repeating pattern of milk crates on it, they are really cool.
I hope more of the same! Little of this, little of that, It’s exciting that the kinds of hands-on creative work I do for “work” and my own artistic endeavors have begun to inform each other– keeps me on my toes. I have a lot of video footage I’d like to edit into finished videos, so that’s a goal, and of course I’ve got a new video idea in my head that’s itching to be made.
Yes. I’m still learning how to answer the question “What kind of artist are you?” It’s the hardest thing to sum up in a concise and accurate way because I do so many different things that are all hard to describe. The best advice in this department came from my friend Heloise Williams, who wrote the feature on me for Take last year. We were just talking about this the other day, and she said (I’m paraphrasing) “stay neutral, keep it light, and read your audience.” I think that’s really good advice.
