Providence’s Chris Taylor blurs the lines between manufactured objects, home decor, and fine art with his bubble-wrap lighting.
Most of us have done it—taken the bubble wrap from a package and popped away. What is it that makes those teeny pops of sounds so damn satisfying? Now glass artist Chris Taylor has taken our fixation to the next level.
What is it: Handmade glass pendant lamp molded from a cylinder of bubble wrap.
Who made it: Chris Taylor, a member of the RISD Glass Department faculty and Fulbright recipient, creates functional art objects intended the home, not the white box. He has exhibited his work across New England and New York, and has done residencies in Washington, China, Japan, and Kenya.
Where it’s made: Taylor’s Rhode Island studio practice, Craft Advisory.
Why we love it: In the legacy of Marcel Duchamp, Taylor assigns bubble wrap new purpose, elevating a simulacrum of a practical object into an artistic product that is as bold and accessible as it is challenging and provocative. (We Can’t Believe It’s Not Plastic!)
Where you can get it: Taylor’s lamps are available alongside drinking glasses, vases, and sculptural ornaments on Craft Advisory’s website.
