Women’s clothes for every body. The October issue of Take includes a fashion shoot of clothes designed and made here in New England.

The October issue of Take includes a fashion shoot of clothes designed and made here in New England. We caught up with Fidelma Wyse, general manager of Salaam Clothing in Vermont, to find out more about what drives their company’s fashion sense.

The answer in a nutshell: “We like to celebrate a woman’s body. We feature a wide variety of styles so we can fit many different body types.”

“Some are loose fit. Some are more generous cuts. Some have more fitted bodies,” she adds. “So we can really cover the age range 18-80.” Sizes range from extra-small to extra-large.

The knit prints are chosen by owner Andrea Miksic and shipped to the U.S. where the clothes are designed and created.

“We don’t follow trends,” Wyse says. “Andrea uses her instincts to select prints.” The seasons dictate the palette. “In the fall the colors are a little darker, a little more earthy. In the summer they’re more poppy, more vibrant. She just reacts to the prints in a personal way.”

Now in its 25th year, Salaam, whose name suggests a greeting of respect and peace in many countries, has a storefront in Montpelier. It also offers online sales as well. Bestsellers include the Suzie top, the flippy skirt — “that’s probably our most popular,” says Wyse — and the Lucy shift. “Our wrap top is one of the best in the industry for fit,” Wyse says.

Added bonus? Thanks to the material, the clothes travel well. Just roll them up and the wrinkles drop out quickly when they’re put on. “We hear from lots of people who travel around the world and carry their trusty Salaam wherever they go.”
